Word Neuropathy is formed by the combination of two words. Neuro plus Pathy, Neuro means nerves and Pathy means disorder. So, neuropathy means a disorder of nerves. You must have judged till now that today’s topic of discussion is Peripheral Neuropathy. The peripheral nervous system consists of our brain and spinal cord. The electrical nerves except the blood nerves pass through right from our head to toes.
This forms the Peripheral nervous system. This system carries the information from the central nervous system and spinal cord to the brain. In short, we can say that the problem is nerves. This means that the nerves don’t work properly. It’s a possibility that a single nerve is damaged, a group of nerves has been damaged or an organ has been damaged. There might be different reasons behind it. Because of this disorder, all the nerves in the body can be damaged. Different diseases may damage nerves in a specific part, organ, or the whole nerves in our body.
CAUSES
There might be different reasons for this disorder. It varies from person to person. This type of disorder is not restricted to any age group, Mostly this disease can be seen in elderly people. The genetic disorder may be one of the reasons behind it. The most common reason behind it is uncontrolled blood sugar levels. Such people are more prone to this disease. It damages the nerves of the hands and feet in diabetic people mostly. Such people may feel numbness in their hands or feet or both hands and feet can show the signs.
They May Lose The Sensation Of Hot And Cold
They may also lose the sensation of hot and cold. The auto-immune disorder might be the other reason behind this disease. It means that your immune system is damaging the cells of your nerves. In the case of arthritis, the peripheral nervous system can be damaged because of the low flow of blood in the concerned vessels, thereby affecting the said person. This person finds difficulty in walking and other activities in which joints are involved.
Diseases Caused
The person may feel uncomfortable while sitting or bending. Chronic kidney disease, HIV, AIDS, SHINGLES, and HEPATITIS are other diseases that can be caused by the peripheral nerve disorder. Lack of vitamins such as vitamin B1, B6, and vitamin B12 are the noticeable reasons behind this disease. These vitamins play an important role in deferring this disease. A metabolic disorder, obesity, insulin resistance, hypothyroidism, PCODs, and fasting for a long time may also cause such types of disorders. Bone marrow problems, heavy metal poisonings such as lead, and tumors tend to incur this disease in your body. So, in short, any one of the above-stated conditions can be the cause behind this.
It May Is Caused Because Of Long Term Use Of Alcohol
Long-term consumption of alcohol may also lead to this disease. We all must be knowing the fact that alcohol controls and affects our nervous system and may incur this disease in our body. Some of the medicines for controlling high blood pressure, medicines for fits, and exposure to very cold conditions may also cause numbness in the nervous system. A tight bandage wrapped around the wounded site or tight plaster on the broken bone may also affect the supply of blood to a particular part, thereby causing this disease.
SYMPTOMS OF PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY
- There might be a tingling sensation in the affected part.
- You might feel numbness in that particular part.
- You may lose the sensation of hot or cold in a particular part.
- Balancing problem, weakness in the affected part
- Rhythm problems in the heart, burning sensation, gastric trouble, and nausea might be some of the other symptoms
- Pain in a particular organ because of the improper flow of blood can also be one of the symptoms.
So, if the supply of blood to the heart is not sufficient to meet the needs of the heart, can cause a heart attack, if the supply of blood lacks in the reproductive organs, can cause erectile dysfunction in men. It can also cause dryness in the vaginal part of the woman. It may also cause uncontrolled flow of urine in men because, in such conditions, the bladder is not able to control urine in it. This disease can take place in any part of the body, as blood is supplied to every part of our body.
As for as pathologic science is concerned, only a few tests can help in detecting this disease. This means that there are only limited tests to identify this disease. EMG(ELECTRO BIOGRAPHY) is the test that can help in the detection of this disease. Nerve biopsy is the other test that can guide doctors in detecting this disease.
TREATMENT GIVEN TO THE PATIENTS
Treatment of this disorder depends upon the symptoms of the patient.
- If you have an uncontrolled blood sugar level, then the medicines for controlling it are recommended to the patient.
- An obese person will be advised to lose weight.
- If you are an alcoholic, you have to give up this habit.
- And if your diet is not suitable, then start taking a healthy diet. Increase intake of raw fruits and vegetables.
- If there is pressure in your disk, it is removed.
- It indicates that, what so ever is the cause, has to be treated. Some doctors may recommend painkillers also, but their long-term use is not going to help you in any case. Try to make adjustments if you have a posture-related problem.
