I have been hearing it for a long time, “Prevention is better than cure”. But I found it to be very true in my life also. Researchers have found that meditation has a host of brain benefits. These benefits include feeling happier and growing brain regions responsible for building memories. It also helps in regulating our emotional state and also helps us gain a sense of perspective. It also helps in reducing the level of depression or anxiety of the patients who are already on anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medications.

Review Done On Volunteers

A review of 47 clinical trials involving more than 3500 participants with mild anxiety or depression was done. It was found that those who took mindful meditation classes experienced an improvement in mood after eight weeks on par with the effect seen with prescribed medications. The study was published on Jan. 6 in JAMA INTERNATIONAL MEDICINE. This study found that meditation helped decrease chronic pain in those patients suffering from back trouble, arthritis, headache, or other conditions. It was also found that the effectiveness of meditation decreased by half, three to six months after the training classes ended. It meant that meditation had a positive impact on the body.

A group of volunteers was invited and were asked to attend weekly two-hour classes to learn, how to focus attention on breathing, body sensations, and other experiences in the present moment. were instructed to continue their practice for 20-30 minutes a day at home. The meditating group was compared with a control group who attended educational classes on their particular health condition. It was seen that the people who meditated for 20-30 minutes a day were happier than those who didn’t go for meditation. Behavioral changes and mood swings were the most problems with the non-meditating group.

How To Deal With Severe Problems

Perhaps in severe problems, combining meditation along with exercise or an anti-depressant could be even more effective. Goyal said,” Right now, we can say to anyone with mild depression or anxiety that a meditation program might work for them”. Meditation guru Jon Kabat- Zinn pioneered one of the first mindful meditation stress reduction programs in the country. This program was held at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, nearly two and a half decades ago. Many of the top academic hospitals in the Boston area offer meditation classes. These classes were for those with a wide range of health conditions that are exacerbated by stress.

Cancer patients of Dana- Farber Cancer Institute can take free meditation classes. It has been proved as a requirement in any therapeutic regimen for cancer treatment and it proved to be beneficial, especially for patients who want a holistic approach to managing illness. It helps cancer patients to cope with pain, nausea, and other side effects of the treatment.

Radiologist’s Research

Arcuri, a senior radiologist says that she has seen mood-lifting benefits in such patients. She has been teaching meditation to patients for the last two decades. She says,” I think meditation gives them more of a sense of calm, knowing that they have some tools to handle difficult periods in their lives. It helps them in achieving some sort of balance in their hard time.

No doubt, in some cases medication becomes very important and life-saving. But if a person meditates from an early age, he can save himself from many diseases prevailing these days.
