As we all know that the brain is the most important organ of our body. It’s an amazing three-pound organ that controls all the functions of our body, interprets information from all parts of the body, from the outside world, and embodies the essence of mind and soul, intelligence, creativity, emotion, and memory are a few of many things governed by the brain. Protected within the skull, the brain is composed of the Cerebrum, Cerebellum, and brainstem.
The receiver of the information
The brain receives information through our senses: sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing-often many at one time. It assembles the messages in a way that has meaning for us and can store the information in our memory. The brain controls our thoughts, memory, and speech, the movement of arms and legs, and the function of many organs within our body.
The(CNS) central nervous system is composed of the brain and spinal cord. The Peripheral nervous system (PNS) is composed of spinal nerves that branch from the spinal cord and cranial nerves that branch from the brain.
Cerebrum
It is the largest part of our brain and is composed of the right and left hemispheres. It performs higher functions like interpreting touch, vision and hearing, speech, reasoning, emotions, learning and controls our movements.
Cerebellum
It is located under the cerebrum. Its function is to coordinate muscle movements and maintain posture and balance.
Brain Stem
It acts as a relay center connecting the cerebrum and cerebellum to the spinal cord. It performs many automatic functions such as breathing, heart rate, body temperature, wake and sleep cycles, digestion, sneezing, coughing, vomiting, swallowing, etc.
How to keep our brain young and healthy
- Get mental stimulation.
- Do physical exercise.
- Improve your diet.
- Maintain your blood pressure.
- Improve your blood sugar.
- Maintain your cholesterol.
- Consider low-dose aspirin.
- Avoid tobacco.
- Don’t abuse alcohol.
- Care for your emotions.
- Protect your heart.
- Build social networks.
Ways to stop aging of the brain
As we grow older, our brain cells or neurons lose the three-branch-like connections. These connections or synapses are essential to think. Quite literally after time, our brain loses its heft. Perhaps the most striking brain research today is the strong evidence, now we have that exercise may forestall some kinds of mental decline. Yoga is considered to be the best. It may even restore memory in some cases.
1. Keep your stomach healthy
Another path to a better brain is through your stomach. We have all heard about antioxidants as cancer fighters. Eating food containing these molecules, which neutralize harmful free radicals, may be good, especially for your brain. Free radicals may break down the neurons in our brains. Many colorful fruits and vegetables are packed with antioxidants, as are some beans, whole grains, nuts, and spices.
2. The decline in the memory power of the brain
Sorry to say, but it’s a fact that our brain starts slowing down at the young age of 30. It is a thought which couldn’t be helped, but people of any age could train their brains to be faster. To keep young and supple you can do one of the million new activities that challenge and excite you like playing Ping-Pong or contract, doing jigsaw puzzles, learning a new language, taking accordion lessons, building a kit airplane, relearning differential calculus, etc. As challenging your brain is very important, so is keeping it calm. Stress can disturb cognitive processes such as learning, and memory and consequently limit the quality of the human brain and life.
3. Proper sleep and laughter
Since studies reveal that sound sleep helps in the rejunivation of brain cells therefore the sleeping brain is vastly capable of synthesizing complex information. Moreover, laughter too plays a vital role in keeping our brain fresh because laughter makes our blood circulation fast and helps to maintain a relaxed brain. Since humor stimulates the parts of our brain that use the “feel good” chemical messenger DOPAMINE which helps in remaining lively and active.
4. Build Social Networks
As we all know that we are social animals, so it becomes very important for all of us to build strong social networks. A socially sick person may suffer from anxiety-depression because he/she may feel neglected and ignored.
So, in nutshell, if we follow all these instructions in our daily life we can have a healthy and powerful brain to govern us and the world too.
